The UFC, with the acquisition of Strikeforce, is now in a position to actually make this fight happen, but will they?
True MMA fans have, for a long time, desired the fierce presence of Alistair in the UFC, especially when it seemed that Brock Lesnar(former UFC Heavyweight Champion) was going to be the UFC's Heavyweight Juggernaut. But, with Brock exposing a weak, almost timid stand-up in his loss to Cain Velasquez (reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion) he doesn't look so unstoppable now. The obvious next contender for Cain Velasquez would have been Junior Dos Santos, but Dos Santos will first have to get past Brock Lesnar @ UFC 131.
Alistair Overeem is slated to face Frabricio Werdum in the long awaited Strikeforce Grand Prix Quarter-Finals Part 2 on June 18, 2011 @ the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The Event was initially schedule for an April date, but was pushed back because of the New UFC merger.
Most critics and fight fans have Overeem winning decisively on June 18th against Werdum; and of course, if this happens, then Overeem will probably face the winner of Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers in the Strikeforce Grand Prix Semi-Finals. And, we also can't forget Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, who easily defeated Fedor Emelianenko @ Strikeforce Grand Prix Quarter-Finals Part 1. Who knows what will come of the that match-up? So unless his new bosses (White & Silva) have other plans for him, we won't be seeing Overeem in the UFC for at least another year.
Finally, if we are to see Alistair Overeem vs. Cain Velasquez, it would require a complete revamp in current plans on the part of Zuffa, and this happening is not likely.
Sorry guys. But, lucky for us, Alistair is only 30 yrs. old, and with seemingly 10-15 yrs left in his fighting career, this fight will likely happen sooner or later.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the upcoming events, because Alistair Overeem vs. Cain Velasquez is not happening anytime soon.
