Junior dos Santos Dominance- Stats Breakdown
TweetNot that you really need the stats to know how dominant Junior dos Santos was against Shane Carwin earlier tonight — the picture alone tells you all you need to know — but seeing the numbers somehow makes JDS’ performance even more impressive. JDS was three, four and five steps ahead of Carwin for most of the night and the striking tallies really showed it.
Here’s the key stats from the UFC 131 main event from Fightmetric and CompuStrike.
Fightmetric
* Total Strikes: 104-22 JDS
* Significant Strikes: 88-20 JDS
* Takedowns: 2-1 JDS
* Effectiveness Score: 482-110 JDS
CompuStrike
* Total Strikes: 94-13 JDS
* Power Strikes: 76-8 JDS
* Arm Strikes: 61-10 JDS
* Leg Strikes: 8-3 JDS
* Ground Strikes: 25-0 JDS
The only thing dos Santos didn’t do tonight was finish Carwin, but oddsmakers still found his performance impressive enough to make him the slight favorite in the opening lines against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. That’s going to be a heck of a fight and to be honest, I think I’m leaning towards JDS mainly because Velasquez will be coming off a long layoff from shoulder surgery. Velasquez will need to be firing on all cylinders to beat the JDS we saw tonight.
Interesting side note: Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos are now ranked #1 & #2, respectively, among the all-time UFC leaders in significant strikes landed per minute, as measured by Fightmetric. Velasquez lands an average of 7.46 significant strikes per minute while JDS lands an average of 6.79. No one else is above a 5.5 in the UFC.
