Anderson Silva Vs. Georges St-Pierre the Superfight

After Jake Will Anderson Be Next?

Jake Shields and Yushin Okami might not agree, but UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva believes a superfight with welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre lies on the horizon.

Silva shared his thoughts on the long-rumored superfight with Mike Straka on this week's new episode of HDNet's "Fighting Words with Mike Straka."

"Georges St-Pierre is one of the best," Silva said through an interpreter. "He's shown that he's a great athlete, and I really train hard everyday to fight the best. I do believe it's a superfight, and it's a fight that must happen someday."

It's a fight fans have clamored for in recent years. Widely considered the two best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, Silva and St-Pierre have dominated their respective divisions for years. Initially, UFC president Dana White seemed uninterested in promoting the superfight, but as fan interest snowballed, his position began to change.

Still, White continues to refer to the potential matchup as a "fantasy fight." After all, St-Pierre first needs to beat Shields at this month's UFC 129 event – then the Canadian superstar needs to start packing on muscle in his move up to the middleweight division.

Of course, Silva has a little work left, as well. The Brazilian was recently announced as the headliner for August's UFC 134 event, where he'll meet the last man to earn a victory against him, Yushin Okami.

Okami's victory cam via disqualification in a 2006 Rumble on the Rock contest, and Silva has suggested he thinks the Japanese grappler took the easy way out after being struck with an illegal upkick.

Nevertheless, he's not seeking revenge in the fight. Instead, to borrow a line from his boss, it's just "business as usual."

"I really have no interest in getting revenge against Yushin Okami," Silva said. "We already fought. He lost. He got knocked out. Let's move on.

"But really, I'm in here to fight the best, and if he's credentialed to fight me, and he's up there to get a title shot, then he deserves it, and we've got to do it."

If the Shields and Okami hurdles can be cleared, there would be little in the way of a Silva vs. St-Pierre showdown. St-Pierre has hinted that he's not entirely committed to a move up in weight, and Jon Jones' recent performances have left some fans suggesting he should be the man to challenge "The Spider."

But for Silva, a historic contest with his fellow UFC champion seems an inevitability.

"It really is a great superfight," Silva said. "I'm just happy that I know people are looking forward to watching this. I think this fight will make the fans happy. It's something they've been waiting for, and Georges St-Pierre is one of the best.

"I'll be very happy to give this pleasure to all my fans."
